Ambassador Lui Tuck Yew posted a rebuttal on Facebook on August 5th, in which he addressed the accusations made by the Washington Post against Lianhe Zaobao. The article published on July 24th accused Zaobao of routinely echoing China’s government’s “most strident falsehoods” and prioritizing access to the Chinese market over critical coverage of China’s government. However, Lianhe Zaobao rejected this characterization, asserting that its China coverage is objective, neutral, fact-based, and without preconceived notions.

In his response, Ambassador Lui emphasized that all of Singapore’s mainstream media, including Lianhe Zaobao, plays a crucial role in reporting local and global news for Singaporeans while preserving the voices of the country’s multi-cultural communities. He rejected the notion that Zaobao “echoes Beijing’s propaganda” and stated that the media outlets in Singapore reflect distinct societal concerns, cultural history, and perspectives.

Ambassador Lui shared his experiences as Singapore’s Ambassador to China from 2020 to 2023, mentioning that he often heard readers of various nationalities affirming Lianhe Zaobao’s balanced coverage and uniquely Singaporean viewpoints.

Singapore’s foreign policy position was reiterated by Ambassador Lui – the country does not pick sides but upholds consistent principles based on its own interests. He mentioned that a 2022 poll by Singapore’s Ministry of Communications and Information showed strong public support for the government’s approach, with 86 per cent of Singaporeans feeling that the government “should always act in Singapore’s best interest and not take sides between the US and China.”

Ambassador Lui’s conclusion was clear – it is misguided for American news outlets to expect Lianhe Zaobao to resemble the Washington Post or for Singapore to follow either the US or China. Singapore’s media and society are unique and offer valuable perspectives that contribute to the global dialogue.
