A pod of whales massed off Western Australia’s southern coast have begun stranding themselves on the shore, with wildlife authorities launching an emergency response effort in a bid to save them.

The pod of at least 84 pilot whales was spotted about 100 metres off the coast at Cheynes Beach, east of Albany, on Monday evening and began beaching just after 4pm on Tuesday.

Pilot whales have been involved in significant mass beachings previously in Australia, with 230 beaching at Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania’s west coast in 2022 and 150 pilot whales stranding at Hamelin Bay in WA in 2018.
