In this clip from a wide-ranging interview with NPR’s Steve Inskeep, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hears the story of a young couple who wed amidst the war and told NPR, “We’re worried about the situation, but we’re not afraid and we love each other.”

When asked what he can promise the young couple facing an uncertain future as the war enters its twentieth month, Zelenskyy said, “I will be with them and my family will be with them.” Zelenskyy goes on to discuss the difficult decision facing Ukrainians to either stay in the country or flee the war by going abroad.

To those who have stayed in Ukraine he said, “You saved it, you did it.”

Zelenskyy spoke to NPR ahead of traveling to Washington to meet with lawmakers where a $24 billion White House request for funding to Ukraine is hanging in the balance.
