A multi-storey building has been evacuated in Sydney’s inner city, after it caught alight this afternoon. Parts of the building, located near Central Station, have collapsed as firefighters try to prevent the fire spreading.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry says 10 fire trucks are at the blaze in Randle Street in Surry Hills. He says the fire started on the third level.

The fire broke out on Randle Street shortly after 4pm this afternoon.

Emergency services arrived soon after, with nearby buildings including an apartment block evacuated.

Police are trying to confirm if the burning building was vacant.

There are major road closures in the area around Randall Street. One car could be seen burning on the street below.

Firefighters could also be seen dousing flames on an adjoining building.
