Ed Ruscha’s had a storied career, leading up to his latest exhibition, “Ed Ruscha / Now Then,” at MoMA in New York City, complete with a room covered in chocolate. But before all that, Ruscha was a paperboy in Oklahoma, where he was drawn to talk bubbles and black-and-white cartoons.

In this interview for WSJ. Magazine’s Innovators Issue, Ruscha discusses meeting Marcel Duchamp, his time at Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts) and the inspiration that led him to become the artist he is today.
