Nuclear arms control and disarmament diplomacy across the world has been dealt major setbacks this past year with Russia pulling out of the New START Treaty and threatening to use nuclear weapons in its invasion of Ukraine. It comes as a new report found the number of warheads being stockpiled by nuclear-armed countries such as the US and China have been steadily increasing. Dan Smith, director of The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, tells The World while nuclear threats have dropped off over the last 35 years, it has “turned around” over the last 18 months due to the Ukraine war.
